NASCAR: The Chase Begins at NHMS

They say all 12 chase contenders have a shot to win the cup. Well, maybe so. Grumpy thinks it is down to 3. Kyle Bush, winner of the most races during the regular season, 8 wins are impressive. Carl Edwards with 6 wins and a lot of mojo going into the chase. 2 time and defending Champion, Jimmie Johnson, who seems to be peaking at just the right time to be a threat.

Grumpy said at the first of the season that the champion would not be a Hendrick driver. Jimmie Johnson could make history if he wins the cup. It would be a 3-pete that only one other man has accomplished. The legendary Cale Yarborough did it driving for the equally legendary driver turned car owner, Junior Johnson. Jimmie is coming off back to back wins at Fontana and Richmond. Last year, he cemented his championship by winning 4 of the 10 chase races. That was then, this is now.

The odds on favorite has to be Kyle Bush. He has ridden a hot hand all season, giving Toyota 8 of 9 wins in the cup season to this point. He is a good shoe, no doubt. He has the swagger and the talent to back it up. Grumpy would be smart to make him the pick. Ain’t gonna happen. With all the resources at his disposal from JGR, Kyle lacks a key component to make him championship caliber, maturity. He will stumble in the chase.

Grumpy’s pick is cousin Carl Edwards to win the cup. The #99 team and crew chief, Bob Osborne have all the stuff going their way. While Kyle Bush has stood in the limelight, Carl has quietly gone about his business. Jack Roush has developed his teams to march in military like fashion toward the goal. With all the talk on Toyota and Kyle Bush, Jack Roush has stuck to what works for him. Looking at the tracks for the final run to Homestead, the #99 will be poised to take advantage.

There you have it. Grumpy will live with it. In the next few days, I will post the 10 tracks that should be in the Chase. I have been muttering about this for a long time. I hope it will generate some discussion.
