Bristol under the lights

The SHARPIE 500 ran under the lights at Bristol Motor Speedway, Saturday night. You can’t beat Bristol for color, noise and excitement. This event was the first cup race since a complete track resurface. the new surface got great reviews from the drivers, fans and media. In years past, everybody would get to the bottom lane and run single file. The only way to pass was apply the bumper to the guy in front of him and move him up. Now, we have honest to gawd, 2 and 3 wide racing around the high banks of the world’s fastest half mile track.  No wonder everybody wants to go to Bristol.

When we look at the numbers, it would seem to be a boring race. After all, Kasey Kahne lead more than half the race. The winner, Carl Edwards also led a bunch. Still, there was action all around the track. ESPN worked hard to cover the field.

Grumpy has said it before, it is worth saying again. Note to NASCAR: Give us more races like that. In my opinion, the best racing from a fan point of view will be at Bristol, Martinsville and Richmond. These stadiums allow the fans to view the action up close.  Want to increase TV ratings, huh? Stop running endless parades like the one coming up in California. Shame on NASCAR for dumping Darlington in favor of the snorefest that is sure to come as the ’see and be seen’ less than sold out crowd at Fontana.

The Los Angeles area will not support an NFL team. Why expect them to  care about NASCAR? For the real fans of NASCAR racing, any race on Labor Day weekend is not right if it is run anywhere but Darlington.
