After a 2 race ’slump’, the 18 JGR team and driver, Kyle Bush beat the competition on the road course at Watkins Glen. Bush lead 52 of the 90 laps at the Glen.
“It’s just crazy the way everything has kind of come along this year, but we were fortunate it’s come along on us,” Busch said. “The good Lord is praying that we’re able to keep our car up front every week. We’ve just been fortunate to run as well as we have at places, and yet we’ve struggled at a couple others. We’ve got some work to do.
“I heard earlier today that the 48 [of Jimmie Johnson] has been testing like 18 times this year and stuff, and we’ve tested a couple places but nothing like that. We’re looking forward to the next couple weeks,” he said. “We’ve got some tests lined up, and we’re going to try to learn something and keep our mojo going and keep it going through and into the Chase.”
Tony Stewart was the first loser as he finished second to his JGR teammate. A pleasant surprise was third place Marcos Ambrose. The Aussie started 43rd on the field in the Wood Bros. #21 Ford. After winning the cup light event on Saturday, Ambrose was impressive driving the #21.
The race was marred by a grinding crash with just 8 laps to go. Michael McDowell and David Gilliland came together off turn 11. A total of 9 cars were caught in the crash. Bobby Labonte was transported to a local hospital and was found to be ok. The race was halted for about 45 minutes to clean up debris and replace the safety barrels at the entrance to pit road. The #77 of Sam Hornish jr hit the barrels broadside sending sand and plastic parts into the air and down pit road. Remarkably, the #77 did not suffer significant damage and was able to finish the race.
Kyle Bush now has 8 wins on the season in the cup series. That is double the win total of cousin Carl Edwards. Funny how these things work out. Last year at this time, we were in agony because Hendrick Motorsports was winning about every other week. So far, Jeff Gordon and Casey Mears are winless, Jimmie Johnson has 2 victories and Dale Earnhardt jr has just one win on the season. Toyota should be able to clinch the Manufacturer’s championship by the time the series gets back to Richmond. I can hear the cries of anguish already.
