Back when just “spyin’” it was all we could hope for, they called it the “Blue Devil” in deference to the alma mater of GM’s CEO; but word has it now that the new Super ‘Vette will be named a more understated “SS”. And, why not? After all, if you get behind the wheel of one of these 650hp babies, there’s no need to be splashy with the name … all you’ve gotta’ do is take that Cobra I just posted about and “ssssssssssss” at it, lol …
Oh, no, Ford fans — but, how could that BE? Hmmmm … let’s see …
If the thought of the new 500-hp Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang hedging in on the 505-hp Corvette Z06’s territory raises your blood pressure, don’t despair: Corvette chief engineer Tom Wallace has a 650-hp trick up his sleeve.
Earlier rumors were that the new super Corvette will build on the Z06’s 7.0-liter LS7 V-8 that was developed in sync with the Corvette C6.R Le Mans racer, but recent photos have shown otherwise.
We now believe that the SS will use a version of the base Corvette’s V-8-bored out to 6.2 liters of displacement-with a supercharger bolted to the top. Joining a new trend, an intercooler will be mounted above the supercharger rather than tucked away using a complicated series of tubes. You can expect the supercharged engine in the SS will produce around 650 feverishly sprinting ponies. [HELL yeah, grin ...]
The SS, due in 2008/2209, will be further differentiated from the Z06 by the use of more carbon-fiber body panels and a huge hood vent aimed at killing front-end lift. In true Corvette style, Chevy will undercut competitors by pricing the SS at about $100,000. This Corvette has been known within GM as the Blue Devil, and also as the Sting Ray, Z07, and Z06.R, but product boss Bob Lutz recently confirmed the SS name.

Grumpy is a certified, lifetime member of the bowtie brigade. Put me down for one. I’ll pay just as soon as I win the lottery or my contributions to this blog pay off. I had a Corvette once. it was a dream to own one since I was a kid. Being a motorhead even before the onset of puberty, I just knew one day I would have to own one. Well, I am 6′2″ tall. My waste line has expanded from the days of my reckless youth. Needless to say, the fantasy was better than reality. I owned it for about 2 years. I got tired of hitting my head on the roof panel when I got in or out.
If you have a dream car on your list of lifetime wishes, go for it. Do not wait until your life is near end to regret such a thing as wishing you had done it.
Grumpy
grin … you and me both … in many ways!!
My “dream car” is a bit cost-prohibitive, at this point. Who among us can afford the Bugatti (ugly as hell, but fast as ALL hell) that took our collective breath away in that vid B provided to anglerred.com a couple of months ago?
Who could afford the damned speeding tickets — er, well … ok … if I could buy it, I’m thinkin’ that Officer Friendly would do more than just point angrily at me every time he sees me (now, still, sigh), as he’d never SEE ME ANYMORE — but, instead, just — WHOOOOOSH … hehe … sigh … yeah, well … never mind.
I’m incredibly happy wth my Chevy Blazer, for now — black on black with a #3 on the hatch, of course — she rocks, she rolls, and she KNOWS ME, grin …
Love it as I do, however — it doesn’t even compare to my brother’s many ‘Vettes, each of which launched the front-end off the ground until we could view stars — even in THIRD gear, grin — GOTTA’ LOVE OLD STINGRAYS!!!!!!!! But, ahem … I digress … REAL glad they put that whole air-intake thing on these new ones to inhibit that whole wheelie-deal in the future (because I have a son with the same damned lead foot as the rest of our genetic stream, I fear … or, grin … ok, more so because he’s just like his mother — fearLESS … stupid … etc.) …. ANYWAY:
I had a collector’s Spitfire years ago … awesome little ride with a nice wide wheelbase, and you’d be amazed by what I could do with her … not to mention by how many Officers Friendly actually copped to the “but my speedometer is in kilometers and I just can’t seem to GET it yet, sir” stuff, lol … until they didn’t anymore, and pretty much just started to pull me over to ask me how much longer they’d have to follow me before having to arrest my ass for — you name it — long story, but they were frickin’ communists … lol
I remember being very annoyed with the size factor, however, too — I’m 5′9″, and managed to whap myself on many’a my Spitfire’s “features”, grin. Maybe that’s what’s wrong with me now … ya’ think?
ANYway — gotta’ agree — if you’ve “gotta’ dream”?? Go for it. No time like the present, because there just may not be any other.
Time to go for it, I mean, grin …
Hugs,
angler
