TEXAS: the need for speed

Good grief, notes and stuff from TMS.

Chip Ganassi is fired up! Dario Franchitti failed to make the race at TMS. The boss is not blaming Dario.

“Frankly, there are 46 cars there and if you can’t beat three of them, that’s pretty pathetic,” Ganassi said on Sirius Satellite Radio. “I certainly have all the faith in the world in (Franchitti’s) driving abilities. I don’t think it’s that. The fact of the matter is, we didn’t give him a car that was capable of doing it.”

Ganassi continues:

“When you say ‘this team’ you hit the nail on the head – we’re not working as a team,” Ganassi said. “You can’t have guys that are fast and guys that are slow. It doesn’t make any sense. These guys, these teams are not talking to each other, they are not working together, they are not using all the resources that are available to them. That’s how you end up in a fix like this.”

“The 41 team, it’s the same old things that take them out,” he said. “One week its this, the next week it’s that, and it’s sort of this combination of all of the above. Everybody on the 41 team is going to have to take a good look in the mirror and ask themselves if they are prepared for what’s coming down the pike.”

Grumpy agrees with Chip on this one. He has a good group of drivers, all delivering dismal, nay poor results. Jaun Pablo is the only one in a position to win this year. We all know where that will be, Sonoma and/or Watkins Glen. This team is not a threat to win anywhere else. there could be a need for some folks to update their resume soon.

The other day, we were speculating as to who might take the seat in the 4th RCR car #33. We know that General Mills will leave Petty Enterprises to join RCR. The odds on pick to drive may be past champion, Bobby Labonte. Talk about another team that is not a threat to win, Petty Enterprises is high on that list.  The King may find it difficult to get a new sponsor to sign on to the 43. the 45 is struggling to make the show. Kyle stepped out, Chad McCumbie sat down and the car was not fast enough to make the show. I refer you to the comments by Chip above, it all applies to the Petty team. Grumpy thinks that Labonte should move on. Another name that was dropped was Rousch-Sox driver, Greg Biffle. There are many questions about whether Biffle could work at RCR given his long standing fued with Kevin Harvick. During their cup light years the 2 past champions often locked horns on and off the track. May not matter, the Biff assures us that although he has signed nothing, he will likely stay at Rousch-Sox. He further speculated about the worry of going to Daytona with a team with no points and how some very good drivers can miss the 500 through no fault of their own. Hmm, no guts, Biff? If Labonte takes the ride, that becomes a moot issue since he is a recent past champion.

Cup light: Kyle ‘Rowdy’ Bush put the field in the mirror on Saturday to  win the cowboy hat. Driving a JGR Toyota, Bush has lead the most laps and been a threat to win at every event. He now has the unique pleasure of winning in all 3 top NA$CAR divisions for ‘08. Not a small accomplishment this early in the season.
