Shelby’s New GTH Going to HERTZ?????

Thanks to http://www.stangbangers.com/2007.htm

Ok … if anyone else has been watching Barrett-Jackson this weekend, are you just as appalled as I am over the Ford unveiling?? lol … Carroll Shelby just helped launch the newest GTH for Ford … nice black convertible, came with a matching Fender guitar (I liked that better than the ride, grin), buyer gets #001/500 for $250,000 … all good, even though I’m not a Ford fan. But, the other 499 are going to … HERTZ. Yup. To be rented. When Barrett announced it during bidding, I had to laugh … I would’ve been outa’ that bidding pretty much immediately. Nice to have a #001, granted, but if the other #499 are trashed out by idiots, what’s the point?? Ah, one of a kind … one of a kind of only 319hp … I’m just not impressed. I initially thought it was a pretty cool marketing move on Ford’s part, and nice to have the money going to Shelby’s charity foundation, etc., but after seeing it, and it’s sorta’ blah … and then this Hertz-deal … sigh … does everything having anything remotely to do with cars lately have to be so anticlimactic?? Geez … I thought it was enough that all the races have seemed to suck lately, lol …

Did anyone get a pic of this thing?
I was watching the B-J when they talked about the car and showed it under a cover. To my dismay, I had to leave for work before it was shown. If the other 499 go to fleet, I can’t believe anyone would pay that kind of money for the first one. Well, the money goes to charity, so the buyer will get a tax write off for that too.

I love watching B-J on SPEED. I can’t believe all the cool cars and the money people are willing to pay. Oh well, ifr I can just win a lottery!

    Hey, G!

Thank God for B, huh? He comes in at lightening speed, and usually with some pretty cool stuff. Now, if I can just get my crew chief to call himself “lansingit.com” vs. “admin”, we’ll be all set!

Don’t feel bad that you missed the grand unveiling, as it wasn’t that impressive. I’d been very stoked to see Carroll Shelby, granted, and happy to know it was all for charity — all good — but when it came time to drop the net … the net should’ve been dropped on the guy who paid a quarter-mil, in my mind.

Granted — 30-40 years from now, it might go for … well … if Palm Beach vs. Scottsdale prices are any indications — take that ride WEST, old man!!!!

    Sigh …

I’m not a Ford gal, but I do appreciate speed … it’s just that … this deal? Doesn’t impress me in any manner whatsoever, so … don’t feel bad at ALL that you missed it. Just go to HERTZ before the idiots trash out the fleet. I expect that to be … oh, about … next week, considering the fact that there isn’t much behind the brand this time.

Oh … there’s also the fact that any traction control has been ironed-in on the Hertz models to the point of making everyone who rents it thinking that they can bypass it — pushing yet one more envelope on a car they don’t own. Like we all do … but, with this one - even more so.

Don’t EVER buy one not certified #001, and I guarantee that he won’t sell it any time soon.

Hope for the lottery, G, grin — then, just perhaps, you could get a true classic, darlin’. This one’s just a marketing ploy, and I’m disappointed in Shelby — charity or not.

    Hi, qtip!

Welcome, and really glad you chimed in!

Very cool that you were there that night … in fact, I probably saw you in one of the cameras’ big-pans, and yet I’ll never know it, grin …

In any case … I can imagine that seeing it all happen in person would be so much more satisfying than to watch it from your living room.

And, please don’t get me wrong — it’s not that I don’t think she’s pretty — she was/is … I think it’s just that I was expecting so much more. They had it undercover for days, Shelby was there, and I felt as if we were all about to see a very powerful launch of a new badass snake … and then …

HP is average, design is basically the same (not to say that it’s not a LOT better than before the Snake came back to Ford), and … all the rest are going to be going to … a RENTAL company?

Sigh … I suppose my criticism lies even more in the hype leading up to this than it is in the car itself. I DO rent ’stang convertibles whenever I rent, so I can’t say I’m not a fan of them … but I just expected so much more from Carroll Shelby in this event.

Glad to hear that even a Mustang guy can spend time with anglerred.com, though, grin … and hope my later posts about the REAL new Shelby Mustang will let you know that, while I’m not at all a Ford fan — there’s just NOTHIN’ like FAST, and most Mustangs are at least that!

    Happy Race Weekend!
    Best,
    angler
