What is going on at NASCAR? Title sponsors are running for the exits. After 26 years as the title sponsor of the number 2 series, Anheiser-Busch took a walk. Now Craftsman will bow out as the only title sponsor that the truck series has had since its debut in 1995. SEARS has not exactly enjoyed a strong profitability in the last few years. One wonders if the marriage with ailing K-MART has helped or hurt the retail giant. Still, the name CRAFTSMAN has a strong brand identity. It is perhaps the number 1 tool brand in the world in sales to the average do-it-yourselfer. Is it market forces or greed? The CRAFTSMAN deal was supposed to go through the ‘09 season. Is there a cost escalation in the final year of the contract?
NASCAR will have plenty of time to shop for a replacement. I don’t know what the annual cost is for the rights, but you can bet that NASCAR will squeeze the next deal for more. They always do.
NASCAR has a license to print money. In everything they do, there is a strong revenue stream. Perhaps the teat has gone dry on another NASCAR cash cow.
