The championship appears to be Jimmie’s to lose. A strong run today by Greg Biffle and Jeff Burton, while a broken motor in the #48 early could change everything.
Grumpy does not wish to see the fortunes of any team turn on the random bad luck of failure. Yet, it seems that the #48 team stands alone as one who has not experienced a bad race in the chase. We saw how fast the #18 team tumbled out of contention after two consecutive bad finishes.
Jeff Gordon is just a few races away from going a full season without a trip to victory lane. Incredibly, it has not happened since his rookie season, 1993. The 4 time Champion has 81 wins putting him in very elite company as one of the all time winners in the history of NA$CAR. If Jeff Gordon fails to win this season, it will not be from lack of great effort on the part of the #24 team and Hendrick Motorsports. Don’t look for Mr. H to make Gordon a free agent as was done with Casey Mears and Kyle Bush.
Jeff Burton is still a dark horse in the race for the championship. He is within striking distance to carry the Richard Childress banner to the podium at the Waldorf in New York. Fans of the late Dale Earnhardt and Richard Childress Racing would certainly rejoice to see RCR win a 7th Championship. The last one coming in 1994 when Dale Earnhardt won his 7th Winston Cup. Six of those were with RCR.
Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards both can seal the deal for Roush-Sox with consistancy and perhaps one bad race from the #48. They can only control their own destiny.
If Jimmie Johnson were to finish worse than 40th today, it would be a whole new race for the championship going to Texas next week. Don’t hold your breath for that to happen.
