NASCAR: Franchitti Injured In Dega’s Cup Light Event

NASCAR driver Dario Franchitti crashes during the Aaron's 312 Nationwide Series auto race at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Ala., on Saturday, April 26, 2008.

Dario Franchitti is being checked at a local hospital near Talladega Superspeedway after being involved in a crash in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Aaron’s 312 at the 2.6-mile oval.

The Scot hit the wall on lap 11 in turn three after a front tire blew on his No. 40 Fastenal Dodge. His car then slid down the banking and was collected on the driver’s side by the No. 91 car of Larry Gunselman.

Franchitti was seen limping after getting out of his car as he tried to walk towards the ambulance trackside. He then sat on a stretcher, visibly feeling sore after the high-speed impact.

After being checked at the track’s infield care center, Franchitti was sent to a local hospital for further observation. According to team officials, Franchitti’s discomfort was coming from pain in one of his ankles.  Full Story

Dario suffered a hard hit right to the driver door. He is sure to be very sore at best. A rude welcome to Talladega.

This incident highlights the risk that cup drivers take when they chose to run the saturday event. In Dario’s case, the team was just trying to get him additional ’seat time’ for his transition to NA$CAR.

Well, a broken ankle’s about right in terms of rude welcomes, sigh … damn. He was really beginning to “get it”, too … and will — he’ll be fine, but I hope it doesn’t take one BIT of the edge off of his game, as he can’t start being tentative out there. Not his style, anyway, so I have faith he’ll bounce back from this one in no time.

I think they all need additional seat time, even though the COT’s nothin’ like Cup Light or NCTS, and I wonder sometimes if it’s even more confusing to jump back and forth like that — especially of you’ve never done stock before.

I’ll have to watch that race today, at some point, because I’d like to see how Carpentier did — in as much as I can find some detailed looks at him in traffic, anyway. He seems about the best equipped, really, at least on a natural affinity for fenders level …

… Hornish, on the other hand, grin … I’ll probably be reading about his performance (or lack thereof) long before I ever get that race cued up, lol, lol …

    I’m so mean …
