NASCAR: ‘09 Cup Schedule Shuffled, JGR Penalties Still Coming

NA$CAR released the schedule for the ‘09 Cup and cup light series today. There has been a shift in the fall schedule among three tracks.

The ‘09 Labor Day weekend race will be in Atlanta instead of Fontana, Ca. A late start time will put the finish under the lights.

Fontana will move to the slot previously held by Talladega on Octomber 11. It will now be the 4th race in the Chase format. Look for the Talladega event on November 1, the week that was for Atlanta.

The moves will insure more moderate weather for the California race which has not sold out. Atlanta may benefit from more favorable weather conditions as well. Rain has been a near regular part of the fall race in Hampton, Ga.

In the cup light series, the new Iowa Speedway will get the spot formerly scheduled for the road course in Mexico City.

For those waiting for news about the certain penalties coming to Joe Gibbs Racing, we have to wait another day. NA$CAR’s usual procedure is to announce such things on the Tuesday following a race weekend. It is not clear why NA$CAR was not prepared to release that announcement today. In case you were on the space shuttle and missed the news; JGR’s cup light entries #18 and #20 were found to have magnets under the throttle pedals during a NA$CAR post race inspection. A total of 10 cars were picked to test. The JGR cars were the Toyotas picked for the test. The cars were placed on a chassis dyno to determine the amount of horsepower at the rear wheels. The magnets were placed to prohibit the throttle pedal from being fully depressed, according to NA$CAR’s Jim Hunter.

It is not clear who may have actually placed the magnets in the cars. JGR has admitted the deed and will accept whatever penalties, fines and suspensions that NA$CAR hands down.
