Cup Light: Brad Kesolowski started 37th on Friday night at the ‘World’s Fastest half Mile’. Kesolowski is the ‘Best in Class’ driver who is not running in the cup series. He ran a smart race with Tony ‘Pops’ Eury Sr. on top of the pit box.
Series points leader, Clint Boyer was leading with the 88 running a solid second. Bowyer got loose off turn 2 on lap 227. That was just the opportunity that Kesolowski needed to get by for the lead. The #88 NAVY Chevy went on to win.
“We were dead equal - Clint and I,” said Keselowski, who won his second race in the series from the 37th starting position. “I knew I needed a break, and he gave it to me. All I can do is force him to run hard, and he made a mistake. I’m lucky.”
Clint Bowyer finished second and was in despair for the mistake that cost him the lead so late in the event.
“I just can’t believe it,” said Bowyer, who leads the series standings by 122 points over Keselowski. “I just got loose down there and made a mistake and gave it away.”
The win is the second for Brad Kesolowski on the ‘08 season. He is a solid contender for the drivers title if he and the JR Motorsports team can keep the pressure on. Clint Bowyer’s focus should be on the cup series where he is in a fight to secure a spot in the chase. It would be great to see a full time cup light driver as champion. I know, I know, Clint Bowyer is running the full cup light schedule as well as the cup series.
Tony Eury Sr. lead Dale Earnhardt jr’s DEI team to consecutive championships in the Busch series in ‘98 and ‘99 before moving up the the Winston Cup Series. Now, Pops hangs his hat at JR Motorsports to run the #88 team for Dale jr.
Dario Franchitti had a great run in the Ganassi #40. He qualified well, lead a bunch of laps and just about got the checkers before getting tore up on the final lap. He was a sure top 10 otherwise. Hats off to the Scotsman who has been relegated to a limited role since his cup series entry was parked for lack of sponsorship.
NCTS: Wednesday night, the truck series ran at Bristol. Johnny Benson was strong and look like he might get to pick up his 4th consecutive win. It was not to be as Kyle Bush took the win driving the #51 for Billy Ballew. Scott Speed had a great night running for Red Bull and for having limited NASCAR experience finished in the top 5. A tough thing to do at Bristol for even the veterans.
