Supporting Our Military, One eMail At A Time

Final Weekend to Help Get Packages to our Military
This is our final weekend to make it happen for Operation Soldier Care, our project to send Mary Kay sun/skin care packages to our troops battling the desert heat. Our project ends Monday the 18th.

We have reached higher than we ever thought possible. As of this writing, we’ve currently raised $2411.00 for the care package project which is the eqivalent of making it 48% of the way toward our goal. We’d love to make it all the way. However, we can’t do it alone. If you could take some time and help us spread the word we believe it will make all the difference.

What a great idea, what a great blog … and what a GREAT opportunity for anglerred to help this and other efforts to SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!!!

‘Operation Soldier Care’ and ‘Email Our Military (U.S.) are both now on our blogroll, so you may jump there any time you come to anglerred for more info on what they’re doing & how YOU can help … plus, how YOU can get in touch with our service men and women – and their families and friends – to truly say THANK YOU FOR YOUR SACRIFICES, EVERY SINGLE DAY.

CONGRATULATIONS AND WELL DONE, OSC!

ANGLER: NASCAR & Beyond … COMMMMMMMMMENTS!!! Hey, everyone … just a reminder that, not only do we encourage and LOVE it when you comment on whatever our stories or rants of the day are, don’t forget to check out our comments link at the bottom of each post, too – even if you’re not commenting yourself. Sometimes they’re silly & conversational … but sometimes? (Especially when Grump or B, or even Marc, grin, correct the crap out of me … or simply enlighten me further … or share their own views – whatever it might be, as they always have somethin’ to add that either questions, challenges or betters anything I ever write here?)

SOMETIMES?? THE COMMENTS ARE MORE FUN TO READ THAN THE POSTS, lol …

Honestly – you’re ALL welcome to participate … and, yes, even when you disagree with us vehemently. (Perhaps even that last Confederate Flag comment will move you to ‘disagree vehemently’ … who knows, lol … lots of subjects and viewpoints to choose from, in any event.)

So, quit wadin’ around, and dive on IN – the water’s great!

Just so you know, though – while we “moderate” first-comments to keep spammers outa’ here, we never disallow comments just because they’re opposite to our own views. Perfect example occurred just last week, when a reader was truly fired up and ended up callin’ me a few pretty nasty names, grin … (Trust me – wasn’t the first, and won’t be the last on THAT score … so, no worries.)

Anyway … get TO it!! Write comments … READ comments … become a true PART of anglerred, and then maybe someday we’ll start talkin’ forum! (hmmmmmm … just a thought, B – don’t panic!) Havin’ fun with anglerred is why WE’RE here, after all … plus, it keeps me off the streets a bit more, which inevitably assists me in my constant quest to remain out of speeding ticket hell, grin …

Be well, and thanks for being a part of anglerred – whether you comment or not,

Pretty neat, huh? Every once in a while I check out where we’ve been listed and/or rated in blogdom thus far, to see if there have been any notable changes, and to my surprised chuckle today, when I looked a bit deeper — the above is our first review (back from February, it appears, lol) at blogged.com! (So, since it’s June … now you know what “every once in a while” means, grin … just felt like diggin’ a bit more today, I guess.)

Lookin’ good, Grump & B!! Our general rating on this site has been 8.6, which is nothin’ to sneeze at, especially considering all of our esteemed colleagues out there & their own ratings, content, etc. … but thank you to this anonymous reviewer for the extra kudos, as they’re most appreciated!

[Guess that means that we'd better keep at this a bit longer, huh, guys? grin ... in fact, it's motivating me to get to those Baja, etc. posts I've had "on my list" for well over a week or two now, and yet haven't had time to tackle yet. Of course, it'll be most helpful for me to accomplish this once I have a massive tree removed from atop our roof after this week's storm, of course -- though some of the 'equipment' these tree-removal men are sportin' turns out to be very distracting, indeed, and some not necessarily in such a bad way, hehe ... ahem, but I digress.]

Keep up the great work, B & Grump! Catch ya’ later!

INDY: Fisher or Duno? Fisher Most Deserves To Race Indy. How Can You Help? http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/indy-fisher-or-duno-fisher-most-deserves-to-race-indycar-so-how-can-you-help/ http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/indy-fisher-or-duno-fisher-most-deserves-to-race-indycar-so-how-can-you-help/#comments Wed, 28 May 2008 09:04:39 +0000 anglerred http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/indy-fisher-or-duno-fisher-most-deserves-to-race-indycar-so-how-can-you-help/ Sarah FisherFans have already begun to help Sarah Fisher attempt to stay in Indy racing — almost from the moment they heard that the her two main “sponsors”, Gravity Entertainment and ResQ, Inc., had thus far failed to wire her sponsorship monies as promised, much less even returned her phone calls — and right before the Indy 500, no less. (Geeez — no pressure there, Sarah, huh?)

Apparently this is nothing new for Gravity Entertainment, at least in regard to making huge statements and later coming up with nothing, (as they did the same in NASCAR before the Daytona 500 this year), but we’ve covered most of that in yesterday’s post about both extremely suspicious “sponsors”.

Today … I’d like to cut to the chase and simply give you the info you need to make some decisions for yourself. One of the most important is whether or not to offer whatever help you can to keep Fisher — a seriously determined, talented racer — not just in the field, which is a place she has earned time and time again in Indy racing (and in NASCAR); but, also to keep Sarah Fisher Racing, LLC in the race as a new team owner. Read what other fans have done so far, so you might better understand that you don’t need to loom forth with a large contribution — especially while we’re all feeling the sting of this national economic crunch (to put it mildly). But every dollar counts, and you can be a part of keeping Sarah Fisher Racing, LLC alive until a legitimate sponsor comes back aboard.  [Click on her pic, above, for a comprehensive view of her career to date.]

Not long after word got out this month that the driver Sarah Fisher had lost her primary corporate sponsor [ResQ, as reported at the time, though Gravity Entertainment was also said to be committed], which is as bad as losing all of her tires, fans stopped her at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and offered more than sympathy.

They gave her money, the most precious material in racing. One fan wrote her a check for $100. Another fan gave her $20, with an apology that he wished it were more. Including those who mailed in checks, Fisher said, her race team received about $30,000.

“It gives me goose bumps,” she said Thursday.

Of the three women in Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 — Danica Patrick and Milka Duno are the others — Fisher is the only team owner. She is the first female driver/owner to make the Indy 500 since Janet Guthrie in 1978, but the joint venture has been rugged since it began this year. She had planned to drive in three IndyCar races this season, but when money promised by an energy-drink manufacturer [RESQ INC] never materialized, Fisher, 27, was left with just enough to pay the bills to cover what will be her seventh Indy 500 as a driver. […]

On April 8, at the ribbon-cutting at the team’s new shop in Indianapolis, Fisher announced that the new ResQ Pure Energy Power Drink would be the primary sponsor for three races, including Indianapolis. But now, Fisher said, that sponsor has disappeared.

Messages left at the company’s headquarters in Gulf Breeze, Fla., were not returned, but Fisher said: “They’ve come up with different excuses. They’ve said different things about it every day. I have bigger things to focus on.” Full Article at the NYTimes

I find it appalling that a true racer like Sarah Fisher, who made her 68th start in IndyCar this past weekend, faces the very real possibility that her on-track wreck with Tony Kanaan might have destroyed her chances to compete in her next scheduled race — much less, without further funding, (since her family has already sacrificed nearly everything they have/had to try to put this team together already,) to compete in any other race these season or beyond. It’s appalling that this could happen in America, of all places, where drivers or sponsors certainly don’t even have to be American — and, apparently, now the drivers out there don’t even have to be racers anymore, either … just adequately sponsored.

Witness a driver like Milka Duno — a woman with far less overall (let alone IndyCar) experience, not to mention far less talent behind the wheel than Fisher, currently enjoying absolutely no sponsorship worries whatsoever — no matter how she’s performed in her Indy races thus far (finishing only 5 of 10 starts, to date). (Click on her name, by the way, to perhaps further clarify a few of the general misconceptions about her “great racing performances” before coming to IndyCar last season.) Nope — Duno certainly doesn’t lie awake at night, wondering if or how she’ll be able to afford to keep racing IndyCar.

But, really, why should she worry? She’s sponsored by Citgo, owned (as nearly everything else in Venezuela), by Chavez — one of the most adamantly hateful anti-American sonuvabitches on the planet, also in league with a number of other, equally adamantly hateful anti-American sonuvabitches. Literally. (Read on for the links to prove this, just in case you haven’t been keeping up with his antics of late.)

Though, really, should Chavez & Co. affect how we feel about Milka Duno? Who knows … but what I do know is that I’ll walk 1,000 miles to the next gas station, AND back, if I ever run out even right damned next to a Citgo station and can’t reach my road service guys, as every decent American should.

Citgo, especially, has no place in America, NOR in American motorsports. I mean, for God’s sake, people, this dictator/communist actually, publicly “dared” the U.S. to put Venezuela on its “terror watch list”, [this second click'll jump you straight to an article that obviously covers it better than one of my March piss-me-off posts on the subject did] among other lovely sentiments he expressed to us about our country. Yet Americans are still buying anything from ANY Citgo stations scattered across this country? (Isn’t it about time that some of you REthink that, by the way? I’m just sayin’ …)

But, hey — as long as Milka Duno is adequately “sponsored” by this rabidly anti-American company/nation (which she also happens to remain a citizen of, last I heard), it’s OK for her to continue to spin all over the track from event to event, right? Especially while America’s Sarah Fisher struggles with scammin’ sponsors (of as yet unidentified citizenship themselves), struggles to assemble enough resources simply to run races (which she actually manages to show well in far more often then not — after all, a pole, 3 top-5’s and 9 top-10’s are nothin’ to sneeze at), and still presents one helluva’ an amount of American Spirit by having pushed on in an American motorsport as tough as IndyCar (not to mention as tough as NASCAR, too), against enormous obstacles entirely unrelated to her gender — but that’s all ok, right?

Wrong.

This has nothing to do with Sarah Fisher being a woman and everything to do with Sarah Fisher representing what’s best about this country — “never give up, no matter the odds.” She didn’t last weekend, and I hope she won’t be forced into it by a lack of American funding in the coming weeks and months, while other drivers (vs. racers) out there continue to log laps fueled by foreign interests entirely contrary to our own.

I hope you feel the same about at least some of this, and will send Fisher’s team whatever you can spare until she finds legitimate sponsorship, and can keep runnin’ up with the boys (and even Danica, grin) — as she has been for quite some time … and not merely in IndyCar.

SO! Now that I’ve climbed down from my well-worn soapbox, if you’d like to be yet another amazing fan who is generous enough to help Sarah Fisher keep racin’ this season, here’s donation information provided at Fisher’s site, as of 5/21:

Please send donations to this address, and thanks for your support of Sarah!

F1/ALL SERIES: NO MORE RACIAL NONSENSE — NOT ON MY WATCH. http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/f1all-series-no-more-racial-nonsense-not-on-my-watch/ http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/f1all-series-no-more-racial-nonsense-not-on-my-watch/#comments Mon, 04 Feb 2008 02:21:18 +0000 anglerred http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/f1all-series-no-more-racial-nonsense-not-on-my-watch/ You seek “inflammatory”? I’ll give you inflammatory, and then some:

Before I continue on with posting here, much less with anything else related to racing, I absolutely want to make a few things crystal fucking clear so that anyone who doesn’t understand what I stand for (if not what anglerred stands for as a whole), may turn elsewhere for everything racing from now on:

1. I resent the hell out of thinking that I should further dance around the whole Hamilton-Barcelona issue, in case I might “offend” some sense of “sensibility” that is obviously not in evidence much in this world yet, or else this wouldn’t still be an issue.

I resent that: just because I feel a great amount of disrespect for how McLaren has conducted itself in the cloak & debacle issue, how Ron Dennis conducts himself in general, and how Lewis Hamilton has conducted himself by not just his move to Switzerland to avoid taxes and “fans”, but also by actually having the premature hubris to pen an “autobiography” when he’s only 20-something and hasn’t accomplished jackshit in the sport yet — but don’t even make me go there again, as I’ve already done those two subjects alone to death …

I RESENT the hell out of the fact that I “should” have to squelch any single ONE of these opinions because Lewis Hamilton’s skin-color is different than mine.

2. I resent the hell out of what I know we’ll hear or read in the press about someone in F1 or in Spain – or God knows where else — “having many black friends,” and therefore, they’re not “racist”.

Oh, for God’s sake … so to speak, ahem:

My family was an integral part of the Underground Railroad in the U.S., and my best friend and roommate in prep school was black, or, ok — “African-American”, if you want to be entirely ridiculous with the PC-shit.

Should any of that make me more “qualified” to discuss the subject of race than any other “white” or “brown” or “yellow” or otherwise “raced” or “gendered” or “religioned” person, then — as if ANY of us are truly ANYTHING BUT HUMAN ON A CELLULAR LEVEL?

3. I resent the hell out of people who take what other people write or say and twist it, (unless it’s purely for amusement, which I’m guilty of every moment of every single day, granted), into something they want to use against them — personally. I repeat: personally.

When this whole thing started, and I wrote about Hamilton’s car slippin’ on a banana — it was about the age-old slapstick comedy of people slippin’ on banana peels, considering the fact that anti-McLaren fans were throwin’ trash, and, without traction control, Hamilton’s hit a few gravel pits lately, lol — get that? See — there was that — totally unrelated to what the hell “color” he is.

I had no knowledge, at that moment, that 4 Barcelona fans had actually dressed up like “apes” that day. Who would even think that shit up? (Whether or not they actually threw “banana peels”, I have no clue; but it logically follows, in retrospect.)

Give all of us a freakin’ break, already — as if anyone else jumped to the likewise ludicrous (and much later) conclusion that the “George” who commented on my post last night meant for his “name” to be connoted as “Curious George” — a freakin’ MONKEY. (I’m sure I don’t need to spell that one out for you, too.)

Jesus H. Christ — what is WRONG with some of you???

Do you not see what the bounds of hate are, actually?

There ARE NONE.

Once you start down this road, it becomes hell itself, where every single word, every single breath taken — is full of fire, and hate, and everything ugly. It can and will be twisted, and not in any comic way whatsoever.

Is this what you want for your children?

Is this what you want for yourselves, in this world?

Those are the only questions you must ask yourselves, because I’ve asked them of myself over the years — and I know my answer right now just as much as I ever have:

I will not apologize for every word out of my mouth nor my keyboard, for fear it might “offend” someone’s “sensibilities” … because it’s become quite obvious to me that the only “sensibility” we need to worry about in this life is that which surrounds what’s in our own hearts … what’s displayed through our own actions.

I would jump in front of a bus to save anyone. That includes some twisted fanatically-religious bastard wearing a vest full of symtex & nails, trying to run across the street screamin’ “My God is better than your God!!” — into a crowd of American or Chinese or Irish or French or Iraqi or Israeli or Indian or North Korean or British or Swedish or Iranian or Muritanian or Canadian or Kenyan or Cuban or Hungarian schoolchildren. (Give me a map of the stars — throw a dart at this tiny globe … it does not matter which “country’s” children.)

I’d do that, however — not to be any “hero”. I’d do it only hopin’ like hell that I could disarm that bomb in time, because I don’t know jackshit about detonators, grin …

I wouldn’t care if he or she were purple, believed in God or Stalin or Buddha or Allah, or wanted to kill every “infidel” who didn’t believe in “Barney”, that big American purple blob of “love”… because I care more about the POINT:

NOT ON MY WATCH.

There.

It was tempting to try to “hold onto readership” in the face of this sort of racial nonsense — and it is nonsense.

But, it’s more than that. It’s also terrorism. Of another bent … but bent to yet another extreme.

I have no desire to retain “readers” who are willing to buy into that shit, or, who need to be coddled.

Not on my watch.

At some point, we all need to make a stand. For better or worse, this is mine.

Legendary Stunt Man, Evel Knievel Dead at 69 http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/legendary-stunt-man-evel-knievel-dead-at-69/ http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/legendary-stunt-man-evel-knievel-dead-at-69/#comments Fri, 30 Nov 2007 22:13:16 +0000 Grumpy3fan http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/legendary-stunt-man-evel-knievel-dead-at-69/ evel.jpg

By MITCH STACY, Associated Press Writer 7 minutes ago

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Evel Knievel, the red-white-and-blue-spangled motorcycle daredevil whose jumps over Greyhound buses, live sharks and Idaho’s Snake River Canyon made him an international icon in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 69.

nievel’s death was confirmed by his granddaughter, Krysten Knievel. He had been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes and pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs.

Knievel had undergone a liver transplant in 1999 after nearly dying of hepatitis C, likely contracted through a blood transfusion after one of his bone-shattering spills.

Immortalized in the Washington’s Smithsonian Institution as “America’s Legendary Daredevil,” Knievel was best known for a failed 1974 attempt to jump Snake River Canyon on a rocket-powered cycle and a spectacular crash at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. He suffered nearly 40 broken bones before he retired in 1980.

Though Knievel dropped off the pop culture radar in the ’80s, the image of the high-flying motorcyclist clad in patriotic, star-studded colors was never erased from public consciousness. He always had fans and enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in recent years.

His death came just two days after it was announced that he and rapper Kanye West had settled a federal lawsuit over the use of Knievel’s trademarked image in a popular West music video.

Knievel made a good living selling his autographs and endorsing products. Thousands came to Butte, Mont., every year as his legend was celebrated during the “Evel Knievel Days” festival.

“They started out watching me bust my ass, and I became part of their lives,” Knievel said. “People wanted to associate with a winner, not a loser. They wanted to associate with someone who kept trying to be a winner.”

For the tall, thin daredevil, the limelight was always comfortable, the gab glib. To Knievel, there always were mountains to climb, feats to conquer.

“No king or prince has lived a better life,” he said in a May 2006 interview with The Associated Press. “You’re looking at a guy who’s really done it all. And there are things I wish I had done better, not only for me but for the ones I loved.”

He had a knack for outrageous yarns: “Made $60 million, spent 61. …Lost $250,000 at blackjack once. … Had $3 million in the bank, though.”

He began his daredevil career in 1965 when he formed a troupe called Evel Knievel’s Motorcycle Daredevils, a touring show in which he performed stunts such as riding through fire walls, jumping over live rattlesnakes and mountain lions and being towed at 200 mph behind dragster race cars.

In 1966 he began touring alone, barnstorming the West and doing everything from driving the trucks, erecting the ramps and promoting the shows. In the beginning he charged $500 for a jump over two cars parked between ramps.

He steadily increased the length of the jumps until, on New Year’s Day 1968, he was nearly killed when he jumped 151 feet across the fountains in front of Caesar’s Palace. He cleared the fountains but the crash landing put him in the hospital in a coma for a month.

His son, Robbie, successfully completed the same jump in April 1989.

In the years after the Caesar’s crash, the fee for Evel’s performances increased to $1 million for his jump over 13 buses at Wembley Stadium in London — the crash landing broke his pelvis — to more than $6 million for the Sept. 8, 1974, attempt to clear the Snake River Canyon in Idaho in a rocket-powered “Skycycle.” The money came from ticket sales, paid sponsors and ABC’s “Wide World of Sports.”

The parachute malfunctioned and deployed after takeoff. Strong winds blew the cycle into the canyon, landing him close to the swirling river below.

On Oct. 25, 1975, he jumped 14 Greyhound buses at Kings Island in Ohio.

Knievel decided to retire after a jump in the winter of 1976 in which he was again seriously injured. He suffered a concussion and broke both arms in an attempt to jump a tank full of live sharks in the Chicago Amphitheater. He continued to do smaller exhibitions around the country with his son, Robbie.

Many of his records have been broken by daredevil motorcyclist Bubba Blackwell.

Knievel also dabbled in movies and TV, starring as himself in “Viva Knievel” and with Lindsay Wagner in an episode of the 1980s TV series “Bionic Woman.” George Hamilton and Sam Elliott each played Knievel in movies about his life.

Evel Knievel toys accounted for more than $300 million in sales for Ideal and other companies in the 1970s and ’80s.

Born Robert Craig Knievel in the copper mining town of Butte on Oct. 17, 1938, Knievel was raised by his grandparents. He traced his career choice back to the time he saw Joey Chitwood’s Auto Daredevil Show at age 8.

Outstanding in track and field, ski jumping and ice hockey at Butte High School, he went on to win the Northern Rocky Mountain Ski Association Class A Men’s ski jumping championship in 1957 and played with the Charlotte Clippers of the Eastern Hockey League in 1959.

He also formed the Butte Bombers semiprofessional hockey team, acting as owner, manager, coach and player.

Knievel also worked in the Montana copper mines, served in the Army, ran his own hunting guide service, sold insurance and ran Honda motorcycle dealerships. As a motorcycle dealer, he drummed up business by offering $100 off the price of a motorcycle to customers who could beat him at arm wrestling.

At various times and in different interviews, Knievel claimed to have been a swindler, a card thief, a safe cracker, a holdup man.

Evel Knievel married hometown girlfriend, Linda Joan Bork, in 1959. They separated in the early 1990s. They had four children, Kelly, Robbie, Tracey and Alicia.

Robbie Knievel followed in his father’s footsteps as a daredevil, jumping a moving locomotive in a 200-foot, ramp-to-ramp motorcycle stunt on live television in 2000. He also jumped a 200-foot-wide chasm of the Grand Canyon.

Knievel lived with his longtime partner, Krystal Kennedy-Knievel, splitting his time between their Clearwater condo and Butte. They married in 1999 and divorced a few years later but remained together. Knievel had 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

SEMA’s Show Stoppers

Written by: Howard Walker, for RACER Magazine Las Vegas, Nev. – 11/2/2007

Of course, it’s all the crazy stuff that grabs the headlines. The bling’d Mercedes SL600 covered with 300,000 Swarovski diamond-like crystals. The fake Rolls-Royce with 13 TV screens and, wait for it, 34-inch rims. Or the weenie 1958 Isetta bubble car that someone squeezed a blown 730-hp big-block Chevy in the back. How can you not love something that throws out four-foot flames?

But this year’s trade-only Specialty Equipment Market Association – SEMA for short – tuner show that’s just wrapping up after its four-day run in Vegas – is much more than an ode to the oddball, or temple of tackiness. There’s some really cool stuff here.

So after four days of pounding through five massive halls each the size of Kansas, and packed with over 2,000 exhibitors, I bring you Walker’s Top Six “coolest car picks”.

But forget about kicking off with number six and counting down. Let’s go for the grand-daddy of cool, the car that surely every serious car guy with high-test running in his blood would love to have in his garage – and that’s John Haugh’s Mustang-Lambo.

It’s what happens when you have w-a-y too much money and a slightly warped imagination; you go out and buy a brand new $200-grand Lamborghini Gallardo and a brand-new Mustang GT and let them fool around.

The result is a supremely stock-looking Mustang that just happens to have a 520-hp 5.0-liter Gallardo V10 in the back seat driving all four wheels with Lamborghini suspension, brakes and sequential-shifter transmission.

Cleveland-based Haugh, who calls his creation the Tractorri to reflect the fact that Ferruccio Lamborghini started off in business building tractors – I thought LamboStang would might have been cooler – says he built the car “to make people smile.”

And the subtlety of the thing is remarkable; only the 19-inch Gallardo wheels at each corner, the Lamborghini brake calipers, and the view of the big V10 beneath the rear window, hint at the Mustang’s Italian-stallion roots. Those, and the rasping, screaming V10 yowl that hits you when Haugh blips the throttle.

The car took him 10 months to build and after the show, he says he’s going to use it as a daily driver. Well, maybe one of them. Haugh owns four other Lambos, a trio of new Ferraris – F430, 599, 612 – and a Maserati Quattroporte.

Grumpy’s note: I usually don’t lift an entire article from another source. The SEMA show in Las Vegas is an annual gathering for and about folks in the auto industry aftermarket. I have wanted a ticket to this event as long as I can remember. Right after a Barrett-Jackson event, the SEMA show is my next ‘gotta do it’ project.

This article is an example of the over-the-top stuff you can see if you are lucky enough to get tickets. The show is so large, I am told it takes DAYS to see it all. You need a comfy pair of shoes and lots of patience.

So, angler…..is this a ‘guy thing’?

BARRETT-JACKSON Auction books Vegas for ‘08 http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/barrett-jackson-auction-books-vegas-for-08/ http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/barrett-jackson-auction-books-vegas-for-08/#comments Mon, 05 Nov 2007 16:33:55 +0000 Grumpy3fan http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/barrett-jackson-auction-books-vegas-for-08/ b-j-auction.jpgThe Barrett-Jackson Auction Company announced today that they will bring their renowned collector car extravaganza to the city of Las Vegas in 2008. The world-famous event will take place October 16-18, 2008, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center where spectacular autos, from vintage muscle cars to pre-war classic gems, will share the stage with luxurious lifestyle vendors and exclusive parties. Speed Channel will bring the action home with live TV coverage during the auction as approximately 600 of the world’s finest collector cars are sold at No Reserve.
“Las Vegas as a city mirrors the dynamic atmosphere of a Barrett-Jackson event,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “We believe the two are an ideal match and we intend to become a significant part of the city’s landscape in the coming years.”

“Barrett-Jackson represents the gold standard in classic car auctions by providing an exhilarating mix of vintage vehicles, high-energy crowds and thrilling bidding wars,” said Mandalay Bay President and COO Bill Hornbuckle. “The energy and excitement of Mandalay Bay and Las Vegas will provide the perfect complement to this highly anticipated event.”

Grumpy could fuel up the old wagon and head south down I-15 for that one. One of the highlights of January for me is to watch the B-J auction from Scottsdale on SPEEDTV. Can’t get enough of it. Now, if I can just win a lottery or something between now and then, well a dream car could be in Grumpy’s humble garage.

Note to Angler: Grumpy may be missing for a few days next October. Don’t worry, it is a fever. Kind of guy thing, all that chrome. What can a fella do? I MUST GO!

INDY: Lousy Racing Looks Like A Climate Problem … http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/indy-lousy-racing-looks-like-a-climate-problem/ http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/indy-lousy-racing-looks-like-a-climate-problem/#comments Tue, 17 Apr 2007 04:18:05 +0000 anglerred http://anglerred.com/uncategorized/indy-lousy-racing-looks-like-a-climate-problem/ Made ya’ look! grin … no, really … there is a critical problem not just in Indy, but also in our environment (hence, climate issues), just in case you’ve been sleeping for the past twenty years.

“There is likely to be a decline in the total tuna stocks and a migration of these stocks westwards, both of which will lead to changes in the catch in different islands.” Warming temperatures will cause increased drought and sea-level rises in Australia and New Zealand by 2030 and threaten ecologically rich sites such as the Great Barrier Reef, according to excerpts from a new scientific report released Tuesday. The South Pacific Islands, meanwhile, will be swamped by sea level rises as well as increased frequency of cyclones, according to the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Island economies also will suffer as warming waters damage coral reefs and hurt the fishing industries. Link

And if you think this is nothing, because it doesn’t sound too bad, and hell — it won’t happen until 2030 anyway? Ha … that’s the tip of the melting iceberg, folks … though I’ll refrain from torturing you with the actuals from now until maybe 2010 … maybe 2015 — and yeah, most of you will still be trying to breathe by then, so … maybe … maybe … maybe … we all love racin’ enough to give up some of the other shit that’s killing all of our grandchildren, proactively …

Like … never mind what the ‘fishing industries’ are doing to the environment, or, what the conspicuous consumption age is doing to every freakin’ living thing on the planet, or, what carbon (like, uh, carbon-based fuel, for example) is doing to our climate, to the earth we grow our food in, to the air our children breathe … or even what the hell we’re doing to our racing environment by allowing Chavez into Indy, but, hey … I’m sure that’s all just me, grin …

Maybe just … think about it. Maybe just … take a stand someday, about just one thing. Maybe plastics. Maybe recycling. Maybe just taking the time to read labels and refusing to buy crap from conglomerates and/or nations that are the globe’s worst offenders. I’m just sayin’ …
