Four time Indy 500 winner, Rick Mears was smooth and oh, so good. One time car owner and lifetime safety guru, Bill Simpson saw something very special about Mears. So special that he took interest in young Rick. that lead to an introduction to Roger Penske. Mears would become a near instant star in the CART series. winning 4 times at the Brickyard to tie the legendary A.J. Foyt. 3 Cart series championships to his credit. And then, at the top of his game, he retired as a driver. Mears has remained involved with Penske Racing behind the scenes. A sort of mentor and talent scout. Inducted into the INTERNATIONAL MOTORSPORTS HALL OF FAME, the original ‘Rocketman’ leads a low profile life away from the track.
And now comes Casey Mears, nephew of Rick, and son of Roger Mears. Casey has begun to prove his meddle in the tough world of NASCAR. We knew he could win. He has the DNA for it. That he made the decision to come to NASCAR instead of persuing a career in open wheel is getting more common everyday. Young, good looking and very personable, Casey Mears will represent his sponsors well. he should become a bigger hit with the fans now that he is a winner. How could he be less with a name like Mears?
Grumpy
